Teaching English Worldwide

Teaching English Worldwide

The employment rate is certainly not being improved by the current financial situation and with many students graduating into a recession options on the employment scene are not vast. One option that is growing in both popularity and demand is teaching English abroad. TEFL, Teaching English as a Foreign Language offers both a fulfilling job and a chance to travel. This industry, however, used to be a lot more simple, with many people easily acquiring a teaching position abroad simply because they were native English speakers. Now, as the standard of English needs to be of a higher quality, entry requirements are set much higher.

Teaching positions are available worldwide with contracts lasting from 6 months to over a year. There are also many popular summer schools both in the UK and abroad that require TEFL teachers. There are also many differing forms of English that are currently needed, for example, business English, conversational English and English for young learners. When training for a TEFL qualification you will often concentrate on the form you are most keen on teaching. Requirements to get onto a TEFL training course are often similar to college entry requirements of GCSE`s or a high school diploma. Some courses may require higher education levels such as A levels, but all of the courses will require a native or high level English speaker with a good grasp of the English language. Requirements for a teacher are often much higher with a minimum of a degree and a TEFL qualification needed in most cases. You will also find that weekend TEFL courses are not suitable qualifications to get you a position teaching as most quality English schools will require a minimum of a TEFL International Certificate or CELTA.

A worthwhile TEFL course is a month intensive course. It will require full time study and complete commitment from the students, but anything less will not prepare you properly for a position as a TEFL teacher and the stresses that accompany it. These courses can be found worldwide, with some particularly popular and reputable courses found in Prague. Ideally you want to study for your TEFL qualification abroad as it allows you to get first hand teaching experience of non-English speakers. If the course does not offer teaching practice and observation of teaching practice as a regular feature, it is unlikely to be a valid or worthwhile course. Most courses will be quite expensive and often include airport transfer and accommodation while abroad. It is certainly a worthwhile expense as once you are qualified the TEFL certificate will allow you to travel worldwide.

When applying for a position you will find that most schools will either provide accommodation or include it in the pay scheme. Although pay as a teacher of English abroad is certainly not enough to allow you to save, it is enough to allow you to live comfortably. Naturally, the specifics of the pay will depend on the country and school. Quality TEFL teachers are in high demand in practically every country across the world, including the UK. Not only are they offered the chance to travel, but also once they have chosen a position they can experience the culture and lifestyle of that country first-hand and become an essential part of that community. However, you may find some cheap flights and visit the town you intend to live in before you accept a position to make sure the atmosphere is right for you.

"I have just started my first teaching job. It was nice to have the opportunity to put the theory into practice. The teaching tips were especially realistic and helpful."
